Our Veg Garden

Our Organic Garden

Well, in celebration of Earth Day, I managed to remove my collection of aging unwanted 4x4s, etc, which have now gone to be recycled and the land on which they were stored has been reclaimed for our long-awaited organic garden.

Because we live on top of what used to be a quarry, there isn’t much topsoil, so this will have to be brought in.

As the garden is on quite a steep slope, it will have to be ‘stepped’, as they did with “stryp lynchetts” in ‘days of old’. So I’m currently collecting old wood to be recycled into raised boxes to contain the different types of vegetables we will grow.

The veg garden will reach up to the where the blue car (not mine) is presently parked. Still a lot of work to do!…

and a few days later, the area is starting to be cleared and marked out…

and, as of 13th May, the first raised box is under construction and has been temporarily placed in position. We have now located a source of well rotted manure, so will be collecting shortly, as it’s free compared with £60 per ton of topsoil!

We’ve now been working clearing the roots, weeds and stones, before the raised box is positioned on the levelled area. The delights of gardening!

Although we had a late start, we now have had a small crop of organic peas and corgettes and now, another raised box has joined it! next will be a box for fruit bushes, which will be constructed as soon as the relocated compost bins are completed.

This is the garden in September 2011, with the latest ‘box’ for winter plants under preparation:
